Easy Brokerage™ was and idea that Matthew Meath, the person behind AMEE Easy Software Solutions Pty Ltd, had in 2000. Here is his story:
The better way
Matthew Meath is a Financial Planner with a diverse background. In February 2000 Matt was employed as a Financial Planner in a
a Count Wealth Accountants Franchise in Melbourne.
One of the key problems he was facing was how to get meaningful information in a timely and cost efficient manner from the brokerage statements the firm received each month. The firm where he was employed wanted to know:
- How much money did each client bring in?
- Was it Super, Insurance or Investment?
- What were the fees?
- Did we receive the right brokerage?
- Did we lose any brokerage?
When Matt started, the firm had an assistant who spent about 2-4 days per month, depending on how long it took to balance, reconciling the brokerage statement back to the client. This was about 200 – 400 hours in lost productivity each year or at $18 per hour, $3,600 - $7,200 each year.
Matthew thought: There has to be a better way.
In April 2000, Adrian Pitts, a Business Development Manager with the Wealth Accountants Group came to the office and happened to mention that it is possible to download the statements in electronic format. Understanding the potential of that comment, Matthew thought that it should be possible to build a spread sheet that could sort the information by itself.
Then, when Matt was buying a textbook for his course of study he noticed a book on the shelf called “Visual Basic 97 Step by Step”; and that is where it started.
Synergy
12 months later, Matthew realised the project was beyond his skills, he decided to take the project to a programer who had the ability to take Matthew's ideas and turn them into a powerfull yet simple piece of software that is very easy to use.
Matt showed the project to the programers and a partnership was formed.
By bringing on-board the programers, the original spreadsheet was transformed to a fast standalone application, no longer requiring Excel to run in.
Furthermore a host of new powerful importation, reporting and income distribution features was implemented revolutionizing the concept.
At the end it was clear: We had in our hands an application that did not require a steep training curve or specialized knowledge to use it, and that could provide powerful business insight at a touch of a button.
We decided to call the software what it was: Easy Brokerage™.
Today
Seven years down the track we are going strong.
Adrian Pitts, the person whose passing comment set the ball rolling, went on to become our biggest supporter and to him we are grateful.
